Die Bergische Universität Wuppertal hat als einzige nordrhein-westfälische Universität die Atmosphärenphysik zu einem ihrer Schwerpunkte gemacht. Die Arbeitsgruppe Atmosphärenphysik beschäftigt sich mit der Erforschung physikalischer Prozesse in der Erdatmosphäre vom Erdboden bis zur Hochatmosphäre. Wir nutzen dazu bodengebundene Messgeräte.
Das Institut für Atmosphären- und Umweltforschung wurde Ende August 2014 mit Veröffentlichung der Institutsordnung gegründet. Mit diesem Institut entsteht ein fachbereichsbezogenes Kompetenzzentrum für Atmosphären- und Umweltforschung, das zurzeit schwerpunktmäßig die Forschungsexpertisen der Wuppertaler Atmosphärenchemie und Atmosphärenphysik bündelt. Darüber hinaus ist die Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses wichtige Aufgabe des Instituts.
